The tolerance monitor

Self-tolerance is a tug-of-war between autoreactive effector cells and regulatory T cells. Tip the balance and watch the same immune system produce health, a single flare, relapsing-remitting disease, or relentless progression — then treat it.

Immune balance

Treg strength — the tolerance set-point. The single most decisive dial: high holds tolerance, low lets autoimmunity escape.
Permissive genetic background (HLA, risk loci) scaling how readily effectors activate.
Precipitants (infections, stress) every N days. On a susceptible-but-not-progressive background they produce relapsing-remitting disease.
